Week 8: Cadiz Casco Antiguo Area, San Fernando district

8:32 AM

Monday- My second P day in the field.  Can't say too much exciting happened, there was a big fiesta in Cadiz (It seems like there's always something going on) so most places were closed and there wasn't much to do so we went to San Fernando and just hung out at the stake center there and played games and stuff.  It was still way fun and a lot of our district was there so we had a good time! Then we returned to Cadiz and went to a meeting with our ward mission leader, Antonio.  Then we proceeded to go contact some new references we received from some members.  We went to one women, but she said she didn't have time.  So we went to visit some old investigators from Bolivia, Luiz and his family.  And it was absolutely amazing!! He really enjoys the Book of Mormon and the only reason he wasn't baptized before is because he always worked on Sundays and couldn't attend Church.  But we feel that he has a lot of potential and that we will hopefully begin to start teaching him a lot and eventually invite him to be baptized.

Tuesday- we had district in the morning, and that was way fun. We Have a huge district of 6 companionships! Apparently that's quite big. Elder and sister Guffy (our couple missionaries who are going home in a month :(  ) came and made us a huge breakfast of omelets and waffles so that was way good. I have an awesome district and I love seeing my good friend from the MTC Elder Kroff who is from A Corña in northern Spain. He's a great guy and helps me a lot with Spanish and I help him with English. Then we returned back and did some Medio Dia study.  Then during that time, basically all our appointments that day called and feel through, so that was a little disappointing..  So we decided to go to some contacting while also proselyting in the streets. Something interesting happens every time though so that's always fun.  But we didn't find much success there and no one we tried visiting had time.  So we decided to visit our favorite friend and second counselor Jorge because he just had eye surgery.  We made him brownies (Elder Stephens is way good at that) and visited him and that was good because he seemed kind of sad that day.  I guess his recovery has been slow and painful and  he hadn't done anything that day so I hope we brightened it up a little.  He said our next visit, we need to come with some deep doctrine stuff. I don't really have any of that.

Wednesday- today our morning wasn't super busy. So our plan was to go print off some talks from general conference and go deliver it to some investigators or less actives who don't have easy access to Internet and who didn't get to watch it, so we did that and delivered those. Then we were on our way to an appointment but got and emergency call from the hermanas saying one of their investigators really needed a priesthood blessing so we dropped everything and took the bus over there. The situation was pretty intense. But that was a very powerful moment and I have faith that the blessing was from God and I have a testimony of the power of priesthood that it truly does exist and is here on the earth. Then we went and I ate my first McDonalds in Spain!!!! it was unbelievably good, I've never loved a big mac soooo much.  Then we went and met with Javi, the 17 year old that we played futbol with and invited him to attend a church activity this Friday.  He said he doesn't know yet.  Then we went and taught our english classes.  I prepared super well to teach english class today and I taught the advanced class and it went super well.  We always share a nice message after about the gospel and we hope to get investigators out of it, but you know...sometimes it just doesn't always work that way, but I love the people we teach english class to.  Then we visited the recent convert Ana who is just one of my favorite people.  She has such tremendous faith in Jesus Christ and loves the Book of Mormon.  And she amazes me.  She's very poor but always always wants to give us food.  We always say no, that we know she doesn't have much, but she doesn't care, she just wants us to be happy.  I'm truly humbled by her example of faith and Christ like Love.

Thursday- Today wasn't anything too special. We were in the Piso all morning because we had to study a lot this morning, then weekly plan, then it was Medio Dia so we studied some more, so this morning was a little uninteresting.  But then we went out for some appointments.  A lot got canceled today which was sad, but then we got a call saying we were needed to help out our Member's friend's friend.  So we had to carry a couch down four flights of very narrow Stairs!!! Good thing I've been doing some Body Beast and P90X in the morning with Elder Stephens, otherwise that might've been hard. Hahaha just kidding, it was pretty hard... Then we went to one of our appointments, but our appointment wasn't there!!! That was disappointing, but then we had a appointment with some less active members and we showed them Thomas S. Monson's talk from Conference about being a light to the world. Then we had an appointment with Luis, our Bolivian investigator and he really likes the Book Of Mormon and kind of has a testimony about it, but we challenged him to pray about it and he said he would.  But unfortunately our worst fear came true.  He can't attend church because he works most sundays... We'll continue visiting and see what happens.

Friday-  The Morning was filled with visiting less active members. So we did that and showed them all some conference talks and talked about them. Less actives can Be a little difficult. There's always some reason they can't or won't attend church and it's difficult as missionaries to try and deal with them. Sometimes the only thing that we can do is try and help them feel the spirit. Then we had a lunch appointment with our favorite member Juani!! She always cooks so so much and says Im too skinny so tries to make me eat to the point where I can't take another bite. We love Juani. Then we went back and studied.  And then we went to help this Lady moving from Canada move into her new apartment in Cadiz.  Apparently she just walked into the stake center in San Fernando when some Hermanas just happened to be there and was wondering if they knew where she could stay until she found an apartment in Cadiz.  She's now found in apartment (with the help of us talking to some people in the ward who own apartments and rent them out) and we helped her move in today.  The bad news is that she lives in Puerto De Tierra and not Casco Antiguo so the Cadiz Hermanas get her as the investigator, and she's totally the golden investigator who lives a good life already, doesn't work on weekends, and loves our church so far.  Lucky hermanas... So we then went to what we thought was a church activity that evening for everyone, but it was actually a bridal shower... So we left that pretty quick after realizing we were some of the only Men there... Then we did some street contacting with not much success, and then we had an appointment with a less active member and that went well.

Saturday- Today was the day of lots of rain, which was fine because I love rain! :) We visited a less active member this morning named Milagro, and she has a very hard life and can't attend church because she can't get there with her disabilities.  I wish we could help in some way.  Unfortunately, almost nobody has cars in Cadiz, so we can't arrange a member to pick her up. Everyone just takes the bus here or walks... So that made me a little sad. So today was Hermana Nelson's birthday, one of the hermanas here in Cadiz.  So we bought her a cake and made pancakes and through a surprise party for her at the ward! That was fun.  She told nobody, only her companion Hermana Butler, so she didn't think anyone would really do anything, so it was a good surprise.  The hermanas here are great, we work a lot with them and we are constantly needing their help and they need ours, and we get references for each other, so we work with them a lot.  They've been really helpful in helping us start this new area in Cadiz, as Cadiz used to just be a single area for one set of missionaries.  But it's nice they've split it in half.  It's just been difficult getting it started, but we're working hard.  Then we visited a less active and his wife who isn't a member, and that was good.  He has had some issues with the church, so it's hard to deal with that, but again, our goal is to help them feel the spirit.  His wife doesn't believe in anything, but when people say that, it's okay, because we know that everyone at least believes in something.  And if not, they will, because that's how the spirit works.

Sunday- it was church as usual and I had to talk In church today!!! Not very long though. I just said a few things, gave my testimony and sat down, and I guess I didn't say anything ridiculous and people said they understood me, so that's good. Then the best thing happened at church. We have been pretty down because our success has been low, but 3 of our less actives we talked to this week were in church today, and that was so awesome!! And one of our previous less active (now considered active) got called as the bishopric secretary and he's working so hard. He's way good at it too. So that brought me a lot of joy. Then the rest of the day was contacting in the pouring rain!!! It was absolutely insane here, it was just a downpour!!! We had an appointment with one of our investigators and we brought one of our great members with us.  Unfortunately, this investigator is just not progressing.  He's not willing to overcome his addictions and so there's not much we feel we can continue to do for him.  It's a little disappointing.

It's been a pretty good week. I guess we just need to work even harder this next one because we're not finding a lot of success as far as progressing investigators are going. So that's what we'll do, just keep trying and trying.
